Trappist beer is beer that is brewed within an abbey’s premises.
This beer is a rare collaboration between La Trappe, Tynt Meadow, and Zundert Trappist. Do you know how many other Trappist breweries officially exist today? Six. This brings the grand total to only nine breweries in the world that may carry the label 'Authentic Trappist Product'. Trappist beer must at all times be brewed within the abbey walls or in the immediate vicinity of the abbey. A place that values respect for each other and nature. A place of silence and attention. And this is something that you can taste in our beer.
The production takes place under the supervision of the monks.
What is the origin of the name Trappist? It refers to the original abbey l’abbaye Notre-Dame de la Grande Trappe in the municipality of Soligny-La-Trappe, North of France. Our order is characterised by living a sober life focused on praying and working: ora et labora. The time which rests after fulfilling our religious duties, is spent, with the same amount of dedication, on the production of artisanal products. We cherish the recipes, which are often hundreds of years old. And we uphold timeless and monastic values like integrity and care for detail.
A share of the proceeds goes to good causes.
We produce more than just beer in our abbeys. We also manufacture marmalade, honey, cheese and bread. Anything we do not consume ourselves, is available for sale. This not only allows us to maintain our monastic communities, but it especially helps us to fulfil our calling: contributing towards making the world a better place. Where possible the proceeds are spent on donations and development projects. Most of the proceeds from the beer production, for instance, goes to Trees for All, a valuable initiative aimed at protecting the climate and increasing biodiversity.
In 1881, French monks that had fled their country founded the 'Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven' on premises that had originally belonged to King Willem II: the Koningshoeven near Tilburg. It all started in a sheepfold. Since 1884 Trappist monks have brewed La Trappe beer to provide for their livelihood. The name is derived from the French abbey: l'abbaye Notre-Dame de la Grande Trappe, in Normandy, where they originally came from. In addition to brewing beer, the monks also run an organic cheese diary, chocolate shop, bakery and apiary. The abbey's premises also houses an imposing tasting room, inspired by the original sheepfold, and a abbey giftshop. On the premises there are daily guided brewery tours and the monks offer the opportunity to go on retreat in the abbey.
The Trappist abbey of Mount Saint Bernard was founded in 1835 in the heart of rural Leicestershire in the United Kingdom. They have a pottery, an apiary, and since recently a brewery. It was not until June 2018 that they first started marketing their Trappist beer: Tynt Meadow Trappist ale. It is named after the hill on which the abbey stands. The abbey is characterised by the oak trees on the adjacent meadow that surround it. The abbey gift shops sells besides the Tynt Meadow beer also handcrafted pottery by the monks, books, rosaries and honey amongst other artisanal products made by the monks.
Zundert, which is also in the midst of forests and meadows, is where the Maria Toevlucht abbey was founded. Trappist monks have lived and worked here since 1900. They have been brewing beer in Trappist Brewery De Kievit since 2013: Zundert Trappist. The brewery is named after the original farm of the abbey. Apart from beer, the monks also sell recordings of religious chants sung by themselves, self-published books, and various products from other abbeys. The guest house of the Maria Toevlucht abbey offers two to five days' retreats to the public.
